The POTSDAM LAB is the central location for the Smart City Potsdam model project and serves three functions as a space for learning, meeting and experimenting. It has been created as a place where citizens, the administration and the scientific community can learn from each other, experiment together and engage in productive exchanges to shape their city. The POTSDAM LAB thus forms an interface for the three groups to address current thematic questions and challenges, which can then, as far as possible, lead to offers within the city.

The POTSDAM LAB invites creative exchange within the city community and strives to integrate different perspectives equally. A focus for the first years arises from the Smart City funding.
The methodology of the LAB is Design Thinking, an agile and structured approach that explores, designs and tests new ideas. In the LAB, people can experiment and learn 'out of the box' and across departmental or sectoral boundaries. Direct exchanges at eye level foster networking and empathy for different viewpoints. In this way, the POTSDAM LAB also represents a new social dialogue and constructive collaboration.
The diverse expertise of the scientific community will be incorporated alongside openness to topics and impulses from the city community. The POTSDAM LAB thus serves as a vehicle for Potsdam's further development from a city of science to a city of knowledge transfer.
