Free access to the internet at all times is the foundation of a smart, digital city. Free city Wi-Fi is one of the most frequent requests from the residents of Potsdam.
The sub-measure 'Free city Wi-Fi' will initially focus on specific neighbourhoods or central locations in the form of pilot projects.
By using municipal buildings and infrastructure, as well as collaborating with engaged Potsdam residents, a Wi-Fi network will be established at central locations to provide residents and visitors with easy access to the internet and thus to the city's digital offerings. Existing free Wi-Fi access from municipal facilities, businesses and other stakeholders will be extended to public spaces.
Initially, it is important to research existing resources, check the legal framework (e.g. 'liability for disruption') and select pilot locations in the city based on the resources identified. In addition, the requirements for the hardware and software to be used, as well as the security and data protection requirements, must be clarified.
The Wi-Fi network will be built using state-of-the-art technology and open-source software (software with publicly available source code, which can be used without restrictions). The internet connection will be ensured via municipal buildings and public connections.
